User Reset Password Page

Overview

The user must have already successfully enrolled to use the SMOP unlock account and reset password features.

When the user clicks on the Reset Password/Unlock Account button (or the Reset Password button if the functions are separated) in the SMOP User Pages, the user will be asked to provide their username.

Username: The username that the user is wanting to unlock or reset password for.

Domain: The domain that the username belongs to.

Once the user clicks Continue, SMOP will verify that the account exists in the SMOP database (the account has been successfully enrolled).  If the account exists and the user has been enrolled into SMOP, SMOP will present the user with their secret questions.  The screen will look similar to this (the questions may be different and there may be a different number of questions):

The user must answer the questions exactly the same way that he/she answered them when they enrolled and click Continue.  The user may click on Back to Home to return to the SMOP Home Page.

Once the user clicks Continue, SMOP will verify that the answers match the answers that they enrolled with.  If the answers match, the user will be prompted to set their new password.

The user must enter their new password and reconfirm it by typing it a second time.

Note: The new password must conform with the security policies that your company has.  It is possible that the password has to be a certain length, require numbers and/or symbols in the password, and cannot be the same as the last few passwords that the user had.

Reset Password Modes

There are 4 different reset password modes (see Reset Password Behavior).  Depending on the reset password mode, after the user has given their answers to the secret questions, the user will see slightly different behavior:

No Restrictions

In this mode, the user will be given a screen to set their new password:

After putting in their new password and clicking the Reset Password, SMOP will reset their password and give the user a confirmation as below:

User must change password at next logon

If this mode is active, the Active Directory property "user must change password at next logon" will be enabled and the user will have to change their password the next time they log in.  If this mode is being used, the SMOP Administrator should explain this to users so they are aware of this behavior.

Users may use the SMOP change password functionality to change their password or use the native Windows functionality.

Random password and user must change password at next logon

If this mode is active, when the user resets their password, a random password will be generated by SMOP as shown below:

The user will be forced to change their password at next logon - users should be told to change their password immediately following this so they use a password they will remember.

Users may use the SMOP change password functionality to change their password or use the native Windows functionality.

Random password and user does not need to change password at next logon

The fourth option, which is not recommended but may be active, is for a random password generation and the user is NOT forced to change their password at next logon.

In this case, the behavior is the same as the option above except the user will be given a random password and will NOT be forced to change it at next logon.

It is recommended that users make note of this password and close the Internet Browser window as soon as possible so that others do not see their password.
